I agree with you mainly that we do not have a satisfactory form of democracy in this country- apathy is at an all time high, no government has actually won a majority of the vote since 1935, and our two party system is rigid and limits choice. However, this is not to say that the situation cannot be improved- there are positive changes that could be made. Proportional representation, greater devolution to local government, and changes to the House of Lords would all be good places to start.

You say "(Trying to make a smilie but don't know how)" - which is maybe one of GB's main faults. I've been reasonably satisfied with him as chancelor, but I'm afraid can't see him as a sucessful PM.

Tip: Try tying a colon followed immediately by left or right brackets :) :(

I agree with you Hektor that the union jack has been linked to racism and I think this is because it has been hijacked by racist groups such as the BNP.

My belief is that you can be proud of something like when your football team beats another team, or when you beat other candidates to a promotion. You feel proud because you have done better than other people. So to feel pride in ones country is about thinking it is better than other countries which I think is a bad idea to have.

Munzly, I don't really need a debate, much happier having people agree with me.(Trying to make a smilie but don't know how)

I think that your belief that patriotism and racism are similar is a problem many Brits have. Patriotism and flag flying in other parts of the world do not seem to have the same connotations or induce similar feelings of guilt.

Perhaps it has something to do with the Empire, but then again the French do not seem to have that problem.

Yes in an ideal world the poor should be helped by the kindness of people's hearts, but you cannot ensure that people will give money to charities and you can't rely on charities to do the governments job.

Yes I think they should take a higher percentage and it should be spent in a more responsible manner.

Well I think you are being quite unfair because higher taxes for the rich would effect me quite heavily, I am middle class. I don't see this as a selfish thing it's just what I believe in.

Higher taxation usually leads to better unemployment benefits less unemployment and increased public spending, all of which have happened under this Labour government. Although the public spending has backfired as they have put it all in the wrong places.

Yes I agree, he's expressed regret and there is nothing more he can do. Unless the media thinks that one minor mistake in a persons life should rule them out of politics, I think they are being unfair.

Sounds like you are mostly in favour of higher taxation on other people, so that they can have less money individually while you benefit from greater collective wealth (though perhaps I'm being unfair). What evidence can you adduce that higher taxation in this country has ever led to a better deal for the poor, or even better public services?

But cannot collective, community, action also include the work of charitable organisations? If individuals have less money, so charties also have less money.

On your second point, isn't taking a percentage of a person's income already doing that? Or do you believe that some people should pay an even greater percentage?

You're totally right. I don't and I don't think anyone else does, actually care. I mean, it's his private life, his past, that won't effect how he is now (unless he smoked A LOT of it). So why should it actually matter? I guess it's just the media latching onto some other petty story they can get their hands on.

Yes I am sure I will post things on the topic. But in short I believe that it is better that we have a stronger society with better public services than that we have more money individually. We should act collectively as a community and help the poorest in our society.

I should have elaborated on the taxation point; I am mostly for higher taxation on the rich, we need a fairer and more equal society.

Thanks for commenting, I was wondering when my first comment would be. Sorry if I sounded like I was making assumptions, but in my opinion I don't think that Rice will get the nomination. Current betting puts her at 10/1 to get the nomination and 20/1 to become president, and she has already said that she wont seek the nomination. I might be wrong though.
